Music Monday: “Mother Sky” by Twelve Foot Ninja

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Mother Sky”
Artist: Twelve Foot Ninja
Album: Silent Machine (2012)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

I sit still and silent
For a moment
In the light of the act
If I clear my mind
I am rising beyond all space and time
Nothing that I have to do to be who I am, yeah

[Chorus]
Now I release to the mother sky
All I have to transmute this illusion
I lost my grip, but I have you know
How can this be? I’ve become my enemy
Whoa, oh well I’m around
I lost my grip, but have you now
How can this be?
Why become my enemy?

I repaired shattered diamond
To its wholeness
With these blood-stained hands
Just as I designed
I am rising beyond all space and time
Nothing that I have to do to be who I am, yeah

[Chorus]

Will you see the black of the eye
Separated from the white
If the enemy has smothered the eye
One must prepare to die

[Chorus]

The start of “Mother Sky” begins with dissonant, clean guitar and a moving bassline. What kicks in next is heavy guitar chugging and a simple riff, before jumping into Reggae-like guitar stabs above a wonky bassline. Singer Kin Etik’s hearty baritone swings the chorus in with lyrics that tell the story of a ninja reflecting in the aftermath of a kill (…I think). Twelve Foot Ninja is a band from Australia, though I hesitate to define them as metal because, though they do take a lot of cues from the genre, their music is often the combination of a variety of styles. They are able to inject heavy breakdowns while retaining a smooth groove and a catchy chorus, especially in this song.
