Music Monday: “Dinner with a Gypsy” by He Is Legend

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme created by Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek where I focus on a song I absolutely love and feel needs to be shared.

Song: “Dinner with a Gypsy”
Artist: He Is Legend
Album: I Am Hollywood (2004)

Lyrics taken from genius.com

Is there a place that we can go
To teach the children not to grow?
Where lovers don’t remember where they met
And heartbreak is easy to forget?

Is there no love to speak of?
Is there no love to speak of?

(I’m looking for a place, lookin’ for a place
I gotta find a new place to call home
I’m lookin’ for a place, lookin’ for a place
I gotta find a new place to call home)

There has to be a closer country
Where love can live near me
I’ve got to find it because right now
I’m not seeing clearly

There’s someone knocking on my door
No one lives here anymore
There’s someone knocking on my door
No one lives here anymore

Don’ I know you?
You’ve got to believe me, we met yesterday
Don’t I know you?
I don’t believe her, this bar is closing
Don’t I know you?
I don’t live here anymore…

Don’t I know you
(I’ve got to get out
I’ve got to get out)
I don’t live here anymore!

Is there no love to speak of?
Is there no love to speak of?

I’m lookin’ for a place, lookin’ for a place
I gotta find a new place to call home
I’m lookin’ for a place, lookin’ for a place
I’ve gotta find a new place to call home

Is there a place that we can go
To teach the children not to grow?
Where lovers can’t even remember where they met
And heartbreak is so easy to forget?

There has to be a closer country
Where love can live near me
Well, I’ve got to find it because right now
I’m not seeing clearly

There’s someone knocking on my door
No one lives here anymore
There’s someone knocking on my door
No one lives here anymore

(There is no love)

One of the stand-out tracks off of He Is Legend’s first album, I Am Hollywood, is “Dinner with a Gypsy” , which showcases the musical diversity in the band’s influences. Croom’s vocals move from a sensual whisper, into soaring lines and post-hardcore screams while conveying the emotion of the song. The bass and guitar lines are the true stars of the show, with the former creating a groovy atmosphere while the latter skips about in bluesy patterns before creating Eastern-sounding melodies. The song’s lyrics are rather minimal and repeat themselves while discussing a sort of Neverland shrouded in mystery and warning. I love this track because of the amount of movement between genres while keeping to a consistent tone that makes He Is Legend far more than the bands they were grouped in with in the 2000’s.
