Welcome to The Past Due Review!
“A critic is a man of whom you ask guidance, who instead offers you an opinion” – Guillermo del Toro
“Reviewers tell you whether or not a film’s the kind of thing you’d like if you like that kind of thing. Critics, good ones anyway, tell you what you’ve seen.” – Neil Gaiman
My name is Erik Shinker and, like many of you reading this, I have loved reading from an early age. This blog began after I made a conscious effort to diversify my reading since it can be easy to fall into one genre or another and never branch out, so this page is my attempt at sharing that with others while also forcing my opinion on them. Many of these books and films are not new due to the range of what I read and watch, so that is why these reviews could be considered “past due.”
A little bit about my qualifications; in May of 2015, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. I studied English with an emphasis in Literature and Creative Writing and minored in Film Studies. You could say I’ve written my fair share of analysis and I like to think I know what I’m talking about (then again, who doesn’t?). I have also had writing published in the book Minnesota’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology of Nonfiction.
The majority of content on this site will be book and film reviews, but I will also post editorials that have to do with the craft of writing and other subjects I believe to be appropriate to the blog in addition to my Music Monday posts.
So, please sit back and enjoy my judgement of people who, unlike me, have had their creative work published.
Thank you for reading!
My mission is to give clear book and film reviews with a bit of humor added in, when appropriate, for those out there who are not only looking for a review, but a little entertainment as well.
*A note to authors who would like me to review their books*
I am not currently taking requests for reviews as my schedule is completely booked for the foreseeable future.
